Beer of the Week: Blaecorn Unidragon

I know … I KNOW i’ve been dragon my tail (DRAGON MY TAIL … get it?) when it comes to posting our Beer of the Week lately.

A home purchase, and the subsequent move took up most of my time for the past few weeks, but this beer i’m returning with is worth the wait. Trust me.

Clown Shoes is a brewery that I’ve just become familiar with, and i’m pleasantly surprised by their latest offerings, this brew in particular. Their Russian Imperial Stout, Blaecorn Unidragon, sports an impressive 12.5% ABV and is brewed with a monstrous amount of malt and combined with aggressive American hops.  If you’ve ever wanted to try aging beer, this is the one you can start your beer cellar with. Such beers with really high ABV (that’s Alcohol by Volume for the newbies) such as Imperial Stouts can really benefit from aging.

It poured inky black, with not much of a tan head which left minimal lacing. The nose was molasses, chocolate and faint wisps of resiny hops. There is a subtle smokiness which blends nicely with the rich, dark flavors (think of a bourbon soaked coffee bean with chocolate). Seriously, it starts off like an adult’s chocolate milk. Rich, smooth with a black patent malt flavor, heavy dark hops, with a hint of maple.

Got mine at Cannata’s in West Houma, a 22 oz. bomber. Not to be missed!

  1. Noel foreman says:

Do some research of shakies pizza parlor in Lafayette in the 1960s had a great draft dark with molasses taste . It was so good . All I could find it. Was sold to Japan co. Beer must local dist.

  2. Noel, i’ve done some preliminary searches for Shakies (and the spelling Shakey’s) but the sites fail to mention a molasses brew. I’ll see what i can find out.

    Prost!
